What is branding?

We are surrounded by hundreds of brands in our everyday lives and each individual has their favorite, whether its what we drive, what we eat or what we wear. We have become a brand faithful society and creatures of habit. The success of these brands is down to focused strategic planning and marketing with huge investment which makes them some of the worlds most powerful and influential companies. We can study these successful brands and learn from when trying to establish our new companies or even looking at re-branding existing ones.

The term brand has evolved into something much more than a mark to distinguish cattle. It is now what makes up every business and is the very essence of its being. A brand comprises of many factors including the name, font, icon, symbol, strap line and in some cases a person or celebrity. A strong brand is the backbone of any successful company and shouldn't be ignored. So where should you start when establishing your brand, well it should communicate a clear message to any potential customers or consumers. If it is in a competitive market sector then it needs to be more appealing and be more noticeable than these competitors to give you that crucial edge. The initial points you need to consider are;

1. Your Concept - what is at the core of your business, this may be your USP. (Unique Selling Point)
2. Your Values - what does your company stand for and believe in.
3. Your Direction - where is your company heading.
4. Your Personality - how do you want your company to appear.

Once you have answered these questions you are on the way to establishing a strong brand!
